  1. Biodiesel Biofuel Tytiana Wilson Olivia Taylor Efe Osemeha Tiffany Smith

  2. Biofuels Backround Biofuels are renewable fuels derived from agricultural crops. Ethanol and biodiesel—the predominant biofuels—can substitute for gasoline and Streams, create revenue for the agriculture sector, support rural economies, and increase energy.

  3. Effects on Environment • Point of biodiesels is to reduce the harmful emissions and the dependence on petroleum oil. • Using biodiesel actually reduces smog. • hydrocarbon exhaust emissions that biodiesel are half that of that measured for diesel fuel. • Improve air and water quality by reducing toxins and criteria air pollutants and reusing waste

  4. What is a Biodiesel? It’s an Alternative fuel/energy source-renewable resources: plant oils, animal fats, used cooking oil, algae Used in diesel engines, clean burning substitute of petroleum based diesel,

  5. How is it produced? • First use raw vegetable products to produce vegetable oil • Vegetable oil is a Triglycerides- alcohol glycerin with three fatty acids • Ester interchange- converting of vegetable oil into biodiesel • Combine with methanol, and place with a alkaline catalyst • Biofuels made through a process called transesterification

  6. What Biodiesel is used For: • Used for trucks and heavy-duty vehicles • petroleum-based diesel has up to 20% of biodiesel inside of it. • A much cleaner burner fuel than the rest because of its natural compositions • 7.7 million homes in the United States use biodiesel for heating.

  7. Comparison to Ethanol • Ethanol: • alcohol products made from crops like corn, • Biodiesel: • made of natural oils containing long chains of fatty acids. • eliminates elements that cause acid rain.

  8. Comparisons to Fossil fuels • Fossil Fuels: • Are hydrocarbons • Produces CO2 • Biodiesel: • recycles the CO2 from the atmosphere

  9. Negatives of Biodiesel • problem to produce enough • burning of materials emits nitrous oxide. • requires more energy in production than can generated. • loss of habitat for of animals and plants.

  10. Positives of Biodiesel • Biofuels are carbon neutral • helps the economy • are very cheap to afford

  11. Advantages: • Renewable • Carbon Neutral • Non-toxic • Biodegradable

  12. Interesting Information: • Chinese scientists say that shrimp shells can improve biodiesel production efficiency. • Research has been done about a new biodiesel fuel: • Fungus Biodiesel!

  13. Recommendations: • Biodiesel the best choice for alternative Biofuels
