  5. Reading • Plotline Elements • Puns • Irony • Character Types • Symbolism • Point of View • Author’s Purpose • Propaganda/ Satire • Motifs • Tone vs. Mood • 6-8 short stories • 8-9 novels, 1 play • 4thquarter will focus on poetry: terms, annotation, and scansion

  6. Vocabulary • 240 to 260 vocabulary words. Lessons will be weekly. • Vocabulary will also be pulled from novels (30 words per book). • Vocab tests will be comprehensive in nature.

  7. Expectations • Preparation and Accountability: students should review grammar notes DAILY. • Vocabulary words should be kept on notecards in preparation for SATs/ACTs. • This will be the last year students will have a chance to understand and apply grammar. • Where we are going? Ninth grade honors, for example, reads between 13-15 novels in one school year. Grammar is expected to be mastered. • Honors Recommendations: Students are expected to achieve an 85% or better on posttests. • PSSAs, Keystones, SATs, ACTs, Subject SATs, job interviews, writing samples, and personal essays are the near future.
