  11. Film Review • Who Are They? (Coverage/Front) • Even/Odd Attack or Read and React • Open or Closed Coverage Man or Zone • How do they Adjust to Motion • How have they defended similar teams • What are there pressure tendencies • Have they played an up-tempo team • How Much do they Sub Personnel • Overall Condition

  12. Examination of Personnel • Do they have any defensive lineman that pose a matchup problem (double team, chip in pass pro)? • Linebacker Keys – Attacking or Read and React • Who is their best corner? • Who is their worst player in the secondary? • Are the linebackers and secondary aggressive vs. run action • Who can we double move?

  13. Self-Scout • Self Awareness Is Critical to Preparing for our Opponent • Compile Self Scout of last 4 games • Tendencies by Down & Distance? • Tendencies by Formation & Motion? • Tendencies by Field Zone? • Tendencies by Hash? • Personnel Tendencies? • Motion Tendencies? • Implement situational play-calls where we can break tendencies or take advantage of tendencies we have created for the defense.

  14. Presenting the Scouting Report & Game Plan to Your Players • Players have limited attention spans • Must Understand that Players learn in different ways (Visual, Hands-on, Analytical) • Walk It – Chalk It – Talk It • Present Scouting Report and Gameplan Install in varied forms such as cutups, paper handouts, chalk talk, film study, and positional tests. • Be Innovative- Use the Technology that is Available- This is Video Game/ IPAD Generation

  15. The Scouting Report - Contents • Clean-Up of Last Weeks Game • Examination of Opponent Defensive Personnel • Examination of Opponent Base Fronts/ Coverage • Examination of Opponent Pressure Packages • Tendency Graphs by Formation/Situational • Screen Shots of Defensive Alignments by Formation • Offensive Inventory • New Install

  16. Installing the Game Plan • Meeting/ Film Sessions/Chalk Talk • Practice Implementation • Mock Game (Call Sheet Review) • Positional Testing

  17. Practicing for Success • Average 100-140 reps per practice session • Practice What We Run & Run What We Practice • Practice Script Corresponds with Game Day Call Sheet • Implement Situational and Contingency Football into your practice sessions

  18. Advantages of Practicing with Tempo • Increased Repetitions • Create Game Like Situations and Tempo • Make the Game Feel Slow to Our Players • Must Have Scout Teams Organized and conditioned to give a good scout look at our tempo

  19. Sample Practice Schedule

  20. The Game Day Call Sheet

  21. Offensive Inventory- Base Run • What is the Scope of our Offense • Base Run Plays • Variation to Base Run Blocking Schemes Needed? • How are we expanding our base concepts with motion and protecting with screens attached • What is our best Short Yardage Call • Play-Action & Boot – Take Shots Down the Field

  22. Offensive Inventory- Base Pass • Pass Protection vs. Their Pressure Fronts • Are we using multiple launch points for the qb • Quick Passing Game • 5- Step Passing Game • New Install vs. Their Base Coverages • Man Under Concepts?

  23. Offensive Inventory – Screen & Gadgets • Fast Screens • Slow Screens • Double Screens • Play –Action Screens • Sucker Screens – Have we developed any tendencies that we can exploit for a big play • Gadgets – Always have two ready each game

  24. Field Attack Zones Green Zone – (Backed Up) Goal Line to (-15 yard line) Yellow Zone- (-15 to -30) Open Field – (-30 to +20) Redzone – (+20 to Goal Line)

  25. Contingency & Situational Planning • Weather Considerations and how it may effect the game plan • Plan for the Back-up Quarterback • Get Your Quarterback into a rhythm early • Situational Scripting/ Field Zone/ Down and Distance – Your players will know what the plan is in extreme situations and will be able to execute calmly • Last Play of Game & Score is Needed to Win • 2-Pt Conversion Try from 18 Yard Line

  26. Situational Categories • Hash • Down & Distance • Short Yardage / Goal Line • Medium Yardage • Long Yardage • Hash/ Down & Distance – Certain plays are triggered off of a particular hash or field area

  27. Importance of Having Answers • Drive Starters • Sudden Change • Last Play of Half/Game • Vs. Man • Vs. Zone • Vs. Pressure • Vs. Exotic Fronts

  28. Drive Starters • Openers • Get QB into a rhytm • Show Different Formation/ Motion to see how defense is reacting • Great opportunity to break tendencies

  29. Handling Sudden Change • Make Turnovers Count • Always have “Shots” where we will attack down the field or with an off-tempo or gadget play after a sudden change of possession or momentum swing.

  30. Handling Pressure • Always have answers • Protection (built in hots) • Move the Pocket • Limited need to Change Play At Line of Scrimmage • Throw into the blitz • Screens • Draws

  31. Sequencing Plays • We will practice a sequence of plays in certain situations that will be triggered by one word • Example would be a play-call that results in a quarterback sneak on 3rd and 1 and on first down we immediately line up in the same formation and run a gadget play such as a double pass • These plays are executed at an extreme rapid pace due to the fact that no play-call is being made- the two or three play sequence is understood by all 11 players.

  32. In-Game & Halftime Adjustments • Adjustments to Rotations/Front/Coverage • Who is Making the Tackle? • Are we wearing them down in the 2nd Quarter • Pressure Tendency by Down/Distance & Formation • Are they making “auto-checks” to formations that we can take advantage of • Freeze Tempo
