Amendments • 1st- Freedom of Religion, Press, Assembly, & Speech • 13th- Abolished Slavery • 14th- Citizenship to everyone born in U.S. • 15th-Right to Vote to All Adult Males • 16th- Government can Collect Income Tax • 17th- Direct Election of Senators (Progressive Reform) • 19th- Women’s Suffrage (vote) • 24th- Outlaws literacy test & poll taxes to vote • 26th- Lowers Voting Age to 18

  3. Supreme Court Cases • Plessy v. Ferguson- declared segregation legal • Brown v. Board of Ed.- segregation illegal - overturns Plessy v. Ferguson • Bakke v. CA- allows for affirmative action • Miranda v. Arizona- Miranda rights

  4. Enlightenment • 17th century intellectual movement which worked to limit the powers of government • Enlightenment Thinkers - Locke= Natural Rights - Montesquieu= Separation of Powers - Voltaire= Freedom of Speech • Enlightenment Ideas Led to: - American & French Revolution

Industrial Revolution • Developments in Agriculture led to greater production- less labor needed • Many moved from rural areas to cities to try to find work • Industrialization results in urbanization - Poor living conditions- tenements • Working Conditions in Factories: - Long Hrs., Low Pay, Dangerous

  6. Industrial Revolution Cont. • Women & Children- cheap source of labor • Unions - Better Pay, Shorter Hrs, Benefits • Assembly Line allows for mass production & cheaper prices • Middle Class develops • Progressive Movement is in response to poor living & working conditions • Immigration increases- new job opportunities
