  6. Basic Outline • Heading • Personal Info • Date • Employer Info • Greeting (Dear Mr./ Ms,) • DON’T use “To Whom it May Concern) • DO research (Names, Titles) • Body (Explained in Future Slides) • Three Paragraphs • Closing (Sincerely,..)

  7. Paragraph 1 • WHY • Position you’reapplying for • Whereyoufound the listing • Name Drop/ Referrals (If possible) • Whyyou’reinterested • Includeknowledge about the company • Specificreasonyouwant to workthere

  8. Paragraph 2 • WHAT you have to offer • Qualifications- HIGHLY TAILORED TO JOB • Don’t repeat your resume • Describe something you feel isn’t well described on your resume

Paragraph 2 Continued. • Why you’re an ASSET • If you’re stating a claim, provide evidence • Don’t be general “I am hard-working…) • Ex: “My knowledge of marketing and efforts in brand exposure enabled me to increase membership in my Women in Business Organization by 200% within the first two weeks of establishment.” • DO include Leadership Roles/Skills Career Center

Paragraph 3 • HOW you will follow up • Express final interest in opportunity • “I will contact you in two weeks to confirm that all my materials were received and hopefully set up an interview appointment.” • Let them know that you’re persistent • Thank employer for considering you for the position

Extra Tips • DON’T reiterate your whole resume • DON’T over-promise in your cover letter/ under-deliver in your resume • DO make it easy to read • DO make sure each cover letter is customized to the job • DON’T say : “enclosed is my resume” • DO use action skills/verbs (created, increased, initiated) • DO include location convenience (I’ll be in the area over spring break…)
