  3. The Automobile • Henry Ford revolutionized the car with the assembly line • Model T – “Tin Lizzie” or “Flivver” ($295) • Made it affordable to the masses • Changed social life – Allowed people to go places that were previously out of reach • Auto commuters appeared

  5. The Consumer society • Things bought on credit rose – “Buy now and pay in easy installments” • Bread slicer – Sliced bread! Wow! Awesome! • Did people know they needed it? • How did they convince people they did?

  6. Consumer products Rose • Electric Razors, disposable facial tissues, frozen foods, hair dye • Indoor plumbing became common, and household cleaning products were on the rise • Labor Savors – Electric irons, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, refrigerators

Managerial Revolution and Welfare capitalism • Companies created modern organization structures with managers and division heads • Welfare Capitalism - Companies allowed workers to buy stock, participate in profit sharing, and receive benefits (medical care, pensions) • Ford increased wages of workers • Unions died off and seemed unnecessary

  12. Farm Crisis • Farmers did not share in prosperity • Technological advances allowed them to produce more, but not a higher demand • Government urged farmers to produce more during the war (Many farmers borrowed heavily to buy new land) • After war, European markets rose, and less US products bought
