The role of the Department of Human Services’ Juvenile Corrections Monitor: • To investigate allegations of abuse or neglect in juvenile corrections facilities. • Provide training to DOC employees. • Review DOC policies relating to juvenile rights. • Provide a semi-annual report to: • the Governor; • the Legislature; • the Corrections Commission; • the Secretary of the Department of Human Services; and • the Secretary of the Department of Corrections.

How do I report possible abuse or neglect to the monitor? • Make a phone call to: (605) 773-5990 or 1 (800) 265-9684 ask for the DHS Juvenile Corrections Monitor • Write a letter to: DHS Juvenile Corrections Monitor Department of Human Services Hillsview Plaza, E. Hwy. 34 C/o 500 E. Capitol Pierre, SD 57501 • Send an email to: Infodhs@state.sd.us • Use the lock box at each facility

  5. What Happens if a report of abuse or neglect is made? An evaluation of the report will be made and if appropriate: • The people involved will be interviewed. • Records will be reviewed. • Corrective action will be recommended. • A report will be made to the Secretary of the Department of Corrections, the Government Operations & Audit Committee, and to the Governor. If I make a report of abuse or neglect will my identity be disclosed? No, the identity of the person making a referral of abuse or neglect shall be kept confidential.
