A Current Perspective Conclusion> Combining Economic Growth and Climate Change

  • Germany’s national target: - 40 % GHG emissions by 2020 vs. 1990 (facilitated through reunification: breakdown of heavy industry, fuel switch, energy efficiency in former GDR; altogether ca. 10 %)

  • 2007 integrated energy and climate programme, 29 measures, estimated to achieve 32 to 35 %

  • Combining energy efficiency and renewable energy; nuclear phase-out; CCS not yet (except pilot plants)

  • Analysis:

    • 24 billion Euros/year of investment;

    • 29 billion Euros/year of annual savings in 2020;

    • Net employment growth 500,000 by 2020; 800,000 by 2030

  • most companies could potentially reduce their consumption of electricity and associated costs for these cross-application technologies by 5 % to 50 %

  • the payback period is less than two years and the return on investment is more than 25 % > measures that improve energy efficiency are extremely appealing to companies for economic reasons

  • Exchanging single technologies doesn`t require the change of the production process

  • active air (compressed air as a means of transport)

  • process air (for example, drying processes)

  • vacuum technology

  • The electricity required to generate compressed air can account for 20 % to 80 % of the overall energy costs in a company

  • in refrigeration technology, there is often great potential for reducing energy costs

  • this concerns the continuous operating costs of such systems, which may account for up to 80 % of the total costs associated with a refrigeration system

  • adjusted “busy” times and operating times

  • basicprocess design

  • optimised power, pressure and temperature levels

  • detailed design and selection of individual components

  • use of thermal cooling machines, for example, with solar heat, district heating, industrial waste heat as well as waste heat from combined heat and power systems (CHPs)

Heat recovery measures result both in:

  • lower energy costs by reducing the use of primary energy, and

  • in lower investment costs for heat production plants

Heat recovery can reduce:

  • the connection power for heat energy and cooling energy,

  • the level of energy consumption for heating and cooling,

  • investment costs and operating costs as well as pollutant emissions
