  1. Evidences That Strengthen Our Faith Pt. 1 Text: II Pet. 1:19-21

  2. Intro/Bible Authenticity What the Bible says about its own authenticity: • I Thess. 2:13: Word of God, not man; All scripture inspired by God (II Tim. 3:16-17). • II Pet. 1:19-21: Holy men spoke as moved by the Holy Spirit (I Cor. 2:12; Eph. 3:3-6) Bible’s claim of man’s liberty with its texts: • Gal. 1:8-10:Not to preach what not preached by apostles • Jude 1:3:Complete, once for all handed down • Rev. 22:18-19:Man is not to take away or to add to this book I Thess. 2:13 I Thess. 2:13 13. For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe. Evidences That Strengthen Our Faith Pt. 1

  3. Unity and Consistency of the Bible Three books claim direct revelation from God: • The Bible • The Koran • The Book of Mormon Koran & Book of Mormon have in common: • Both authored by one man • Written all at once at a certain time period Evidences That Strengthen Our Faith Pt. 1

  4. Unity and Consistency of the Bible The Bible: • 66 books written over a period of approx. 1500 years • 40 different writers • Writers lived in different countries, at different time periods, under different circumstances, in different languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek) and came from different backgrounds One Theme: • Redemption! • Its doctrines concerning God, man, sin, and salvation are consistent throughout! How could such consistency be accounted for if God not its author? Evidences That Strengthen Our Faith Pt. 1

  5. Prophecy II Pet. 1:19-21 19. So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. 20. But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, 21. forno prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. • The emphasis on prophecy • Acts 2:16-21: Peter quoted Joel 2:28-32 as an explanation of the unusual events on Day of Pentecost. • Acts 2:25-31: He quoted David’s prophecy (Ps. 16:8-11) as being fulfilled in Christ. • Acts 3:18: He quoted prophets concerning the suffering of Christ. • Acts 3:22-23: He quoted Moses (Deut. 18:15, 18). • Acts 10:43: The prophets bear witness to the forgiveness found in Christ. • I Pet. 1:10-12: The prophets spoke of the sufferings and glory that would be Christ’s. Evidences That Strengthen Our Faith Pt. 1

  6. Prophecy • Prophecy is important because it shows the divine nature of God, to show He is an all-powerful, omnipotent being! • A False prophet has to be wrong just once! (Deut. 18:22) • Harold Camping foretold end of the world – May 21, 2011; Oct. 21, 2011 • Probability of prophecy being fulfilled by chance: • Cressy’s Law of Probability: Man Does Not Stand Alone • Chances of succession of one white marble out of 99 black marbles (bag of 100 total): • Once: 1/100; Twice: 1/10,000; Three times: 1/1,000,000 • If 50 prophecies were made concerning Christ, the Law of Probability says that the chances of all of them being fulfilled are 25,001,100 to 1. • There are at least 332 prophecies concerning Christ fulfilled! Evidences That Strengthen Our Faith Pt. 1

  7. Prophecy • Just counting three with odds of 1/1,000,000: • Prophecy concerning Christ’s birth place (Micah 5:2): • Mt. 2:1, 5-6; Lk. 2:15: The fulfillment proclaimed! (1/1,000,000) • Prophecy concerning Christ’s suffering (Ps. 22; Is. 53; Mt. 16:21): • Lk. 24:45-48: The fulfillment proclaimed! (1/1,000,000) • Prophecies concerning His resurrection from the dead (Ps. 16:8-11; Mt. 12:40; Mt. 16:21): • Acts 2:29-36; 13:27-31: The fulfillment proclaimed! (1/1,000,000) Many more prophecies fulfilled, including those that do not concern Christ! The amount of prophecies fulfilled proclaims God’s power and defies man’s Law of Probability! Evidences That Strengthen Our Faith Pt. 1
