California • In 2010, the Internet Crime Complaint Center had the second highest number of complaints (303,809). • In 2006, the National Police Agency reported that Japan hit an all-time high of internet scams (1,802). • In 2002, statistics showed that Georgia was in the “top ten state” category for the highest number of internet scams. • In 2008, statistics showed that California was the number 1 state where the “perpetrators” of Internet fraud resided.

  5. Safety Tips • Shop with familiar retailers • Look for sites with SSL encryption. Their URL will begin with HTTPS instead of just HTTP. • Do Not use your social security number when checking out. Your SSN and your D.O.B. along with your credit card # gives hackers an open door into your finances. • Use strong passwords • Do not use public wifi to make purchases • If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. • Use companies like PayPal to make payments Danita R. California Vs Georgia California Georgia • 10% of all internet crime committed in the U.S. is done in California. • Conviction can lead to jail time, probation, restitution, and or loss of licenses and clearances • A fraud conviction in Georgia is a felony. • Guilty parties can face fines, probation, and or up to three years in prison for each count of fraud.
