  3. Vision A Kansas City region in which diverse collaborators come together to create an environment that cultivates healthy lifestyles for all of its residents.

  4. Mission The mission of Building a Healthier Heartland is to prevent and reduce obesity and foster healthy eating and active living by collaboratively advancing policy, environmental, and system changes.

  5. Goals Goal1: BHH will advance policy, environmental, and system changes promoting healthy eating and active living in our communities. Goal 2: BHH will advance policy, environmental, and system changes promoting healthy eating and active living in our organizations. Goal 3: BHH will align messaging and communications to strengthen support for healthy eating and active living within our region. Goal 4: BHH will have the infrastructure and resources to achieve its mission.

  6. Core Values The following core values guide the way we work and the relationships we build. We promote a healthy environment. We champion creating communities of opportunity that increase healthy eating and active living and focus on root causes of poor health. We are committed to equality. We aspire to bring optimal health within the grasp of every resident by ensuring that health resources are available to all and by forming extensive partnerships as a means of reaching every corner of the community. We embrace change. We understand that change will require us to challenge systems and rethink our views and assumptions to build a healthier Heartland.

  7. Core Values Continued… We adhere to the highest ethics. We conduct our activities and work with other entities in a manner that at all times reflects candor, respect, and fairness. We aim for sustainability. We are determined to make strides in strengthening health resources and policies that have the practical and financial underpinning to build on each other and continually seed healthy lifestyles. We embrace collaboration. We welcome and bring together diverse stakeholders who want to participate in making our community healthier. We believe in synergy.

Active Living Communities Active Living Communities – Promote livable streets that are designed and operated to enable the safe and convenient travel of all users of the roadway, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and users of public transit. Support creation and/or enhancement of places for physical activity (e.g. joint use, parks, playgrounds, and walking/biking trails). Chair: Ashley Wisner, Program Officer, Greater Kansas City LISC Co-Chair: Laura Machala, KCMO Public Works Staff Liaison: Christine Riederer, Christine.Riederer@kcmo.org

Healthy Eating Communities Healthy Eating Communities – Improve availability of affordable healthier food options using farmers markets, urban agriculture, and other activities to promote and enhance access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Identify and mobilize community resources to increase availability of supermarkets in underserved areas. Chair: Beth Low, Director, Greater KC Food Policy Coalition Co-Chair: Melissa Robinson, President and CEO, Black Health Care Coalition Staff Liaison: Gretchen Kunkel, ghkunkel@kchealthykids.org

Worksites Worksites for Healthy Eating and Active Living – Work with employers to implement policies and practices that promote access to healthy foods and beverages and opportunities for physical activity. Chair: Brenda Kumm Co-Chair: Doug Tapp, VP of Total Rewards, HR Block Staff Liaison: Craig Galvin, cgalvin@machc.org

Faith Faith Agencies for Healthy Eating and Active Living - Work with faith-based agencies to implement policies and practices that promote access to healthy foods and beverages and opportunities for physical activity. Chair: Reverend Rayfield Burns, Communities Creating Opportunities Co-Chair: Vacant as of March 2012 Staff Liaison: Connie Farakhan, connie­.farakhan@kcmo.org

  12. Healthy Schools Healthy Schools- Work with schools to implement policies and practices that promote access to healthy foods and beverages and opportunities for physical activity. Chair: Deborah Markenson, Director, Weighing In KC Childhood Obesity Collaborative, Children’s Mercy Hospital Co-Chair: Betty McKinzie, Director of Student Services, Center School District Staff Liaison: Sarah Worthington, Sarah.Worthington@kcmo.org

Hospitals Hospitals for Health Eating and Active Living - Work with hospitals to implement policies and practices that promote access to healthy foods and beverages and opportunities for physical activity.
