  4. hp strategy the intersection • hp’s strategy is to focus inventive capabilities across three key dimensions of the emerging technology landscape: hp information appliances always-on infrastructure • enabling intelligent, connected information appliances and environments • enabling an always-on internet infrastructure • enabling a new generation of applications delivered as e-services hp e-services

  5. six business groups make up hp • embedded and personal systems – works with hp labs to develop and produce the next generation of smart appliances, PC’s and embedded solutions • a. back-end organisations • computing systems – develops and builds servers, software and storage for the always-on internet infrastructure • imaging and printing systems – hp is the world’s leading provider of digital-imaging technology and products for home and office

  6. b. front-end organisations • business customer organisation – transforms the net into an information utility that serves people in significant, useful and personal ways • b. front-end organisations cont… • consumer business organisation – encompasses hp’s consumer products, including PC’s, information appliances, printers, supplies and associated services • c. services • hp services – handles customer education, support, consulting and outsourcing

  7. research and development • 2nd largest computer lab in the world • 5th largest US based research lab • labs located in Palo Alto, UK, Japan, France and Israel • in 2001, between hp labs and the company’s principal business segments, hp invested US$2.7b in R&D

  8. the proposal JCU requirements summary of the proposed solution servers: netservers unix maintenance and support storage and backup workflow software company profile reference sites GITC contract quality assurance validity of proposals insurance delivery and installation • JCU requirements • hardware and software replacement of JCU’s current corporate computing facilities • JCU goals to be achieved with the replacement of this new equipment are as follows: • increased capacity for servers and storage to manage the projected increase in growth to the end of 2005 • reduce admin and maintenance and maximise availability of services • provide change management tools, metrics on usage and load for management reporting and capacity planning

  9. summary of the proposed solution • provide a storage solution, which allows easy configuration, management, backup and optimisation between various operating systems • maximise integration with existing infrastructure, authentication services, backup and retrieval regimes • for a majority of the applications hp propose 2 x HP9000 Unix Servers (HP-PA RISC based) • 2 x HP Net Servers (intel based) proposed for the Blackboard application • connection of the servers to the Storage Area Network (SAN) are included, as is clustering software • clustering software to address the high availability requirements is MC/ServiceGuard which is available for both HP-UX and Linux
