  3. Hard-hit economy and state budget crisis dominate issue agenda California unemployment rate as of May 2010 =12.4%

  4. What can you buy with $120 million? Plenty of name recognition Whitman opinion numbers: • March 2009: 71% no opinion • October 2009: 68% • January 2010: 55% • March 2010: 33% • July 2010: 18% no opinion

  5. Latest polls show Brown and Whitmanin a dead heat

  6. Head to Head Matchups Local 1000 phone bank returns: • 88% yes on Brown-Democrats • 10% undecided (*approximate numbers statewide)

  7. Messaging • Although anti-Whitman messages test somewhat better than positive, pro-Brown messages in the poll, we believe it will be important to approach this as a contrast campaign that elevates Brown while knocking down Whitman • The broad contrast to communicate to members is that Brown will protect education and healthcare, defend public sector members, and make investments that create jobs, while Whitman will slash services, fire public employees, and outsource jobs.

  8. Be Specific on Brown “As governor, brown reduce taxes by four billion dollars and California had its biggest surplus ever. Brown has a proved record of reducing wasteful spending while protecting education and other vital services.”Members also respond well to information about brown suing companies that exploit workers. “As attorney general, brown has successfully sued big banks and financial institutions such as countrywide that cheated consumers with misleading loans, winning more that three billion dollars for California families.”

  9. Language is Important • Not: “public services” • Instead: “public services such as education and healthcare.” (tested 12 points higher)

  10. Attacking Whitman The two strongest lines of attack against Meg Whitman are: • Her commitment of fire public workers and slash services • Her history of outsourcing American jobs.Less effective anti-Whitman messages • Spending her personal fortune to buy the governorship, attacking her immigration position, and her ties to Goldman Sachs.
