  3. 1. The Sinful Nature • Greek “flesh” • The part of us that is in rebellion against God • Desires autonomy without reference to God. • Islam: “Submit one’s will to the will of Almighty God” • Bible teaches we are unable to do so. • We have to be rescued – from our own sinful natures !!!

Walking by the Spirit • “You were called to be free” (v 13) • Freedom – what it means? • Doing whatever we want: following our own desires • NOT a neutral state! • Self gratification – feeds a monster growing within us! • We are rescued from this monster by Jesus (v 24, Rom 6:6) • Walking in the Spirit – very different to living under Law

Walking by the Spirit . . . • DON’T • Use our freedom to indulge the sinful nature (v 13) • Do whatever we want (v 17) • Live as those under the Law (v 18) • Act according to the sinful nature (v 19-21) • DO • Live out our calling to be free (v 13) • Serve one another in Love (v 13) • Keep in step with the Spirit (v 25)

Walking by the Spirit . . . • A difference of ORIENTATION: • The ways of the sinful nature are about SELF (v 17) • The ways of the Spirit are about OTHERS (v 14) • Neighbour: whoever I encounter who has a need (Luke 10:25 ff) • To walk in the Spirit: • I need Jesus to set me free from my sinful nature (v 24) • I need the Spirit to turn my attention to others (v 13)

Victory • Fruit of the Spirit (v 22-23) ... ... are an outflow of walking in the Spirit. • They cannot be cultivated independently • I cannot have them apart from a willingness to serve • The exhortations of this passage – have an underlying assumption of choice ! • We have to CHOOSE to live in the power of the Spirit ! • The Holy Spirit will NOT override our resistance • He will help us in our weakness
