  1. Mind Jog (4/22-4/23) • What can humans do to prevent stormwater erosion? • Plant oyster reefs, rain gardens, or trees! 2. What are the roles of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay? • To provide habitats for animals and filter the water 3. What does a good job handling stormwater runoff? What does a bad job? • Wetlands=good urban concrete=bad

  2. Determining Water Quality Mr. Swan Spring 2013

  3. Water Quality For all types of aquatic life, water needs • To have the right pH • Be the right temperature • Have the right amount of salt • Have lots of dissolved oxygen • Be clear • Have macroinvertebrates

  4. Importance of Water Quality • The Chesapeake Bay is threatened by industrial and agricultural pollutants • If the water becomes unbalanced, hundreds of species of fish, mammals, birds and invertabrates could die

  5. pH and Temperature • pH: if the water is too acidic or alkaline, animals could die • If the water gets to be too warm, It could disrupt egg formation and Bleach corals

  6. Salinity and Oxygen • There needs to be the right amount of salt in water: too much affects oxygen in the water, too little kills fishes • If there’s not enough oxygen in the water, fish and other organisms can suffocate

  7. Salinity of the Chesapeake Bay

  8. Turbidity and Macroinvertebrates • Turbidity is a measure of the clarity of water. If water is too turbid, it can cut organisms off from sunlight and keep hunters from seeing prey • Macroinvertebrates are small crustaceans, planktons, insects and worms that feed larger animals and decompose decaying ones

  9. Macroinvertebrates

  10. Fixing Water • Keeping pH under control means controlling carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels. • Water temperature increases with shallow water and global warming.

  11. Fixing Water • Lots of wetlands/oysters filter water, limiting turbidity • Preventing excess algae keeps dissolved oxygen levels up • Macroinvertebrates just need balanced water!
