  1. Journal Write • Using the best vocabulary you can think of, write at least one paragraph about your spring break. • Try to include at least one compound sentence and at least one colon.

  2. Paragraph Correction welcome back to IICMA! I hopes you all enjoyed your time off. I have some crazy news, in just 2 weeks you will take you’re CST! What does that mean. Today we will begin our practice; the CST Bonanza! (8)

  3. CST Bonanza! Today, we will begin reviewing key skills for our CST!

  4. The CST is just 2 weeks away! • Is Ms. Roth worried? • Heck no! You are all smart, however if we don’t put in the work we need to now, you may not remember all the knowledge we’ve gained this year. • Do we know all this stuff? • Most of it, some of it we haven’t reviewed formally, but I know you know the information!

So, how will this work? • We will read the standard, break down what it means, and then practice. • It wouldn’t be a bonanza, if there weren’t some fun! • You may work with one other person of my approval • You need to keep track of your tally • Winning students will win an ice-cream or pizza party

Breaking down the first standard • 7RC2.1 Structural Features of Informational Materials: Understand and analyze the differences in structure and purpose between various categories of informational materials (e.g., textbooks, newspapers, instructional manuals, signs). • Huh? • What words confuse you? • What do you think this means? • Let’s start! • Take a look at handout 1

  7. Journal Write • If a genie could grant you three wishes, what would they be and why? • If your wishes just have to do with money, or things, why do you think that is?

  8. Paragraph correction We is going to continue practiceing CST skills today. We will continue with 4 more standards and then we will correct our ansers. Remember to use the “tip of the day” from yesterday, and the one we learnt today. (8)

  9. Tip of the Day • Yesterday: Read all questions and answers before you read a passage • Why? • You will save time and brain energy! • Today: Eliminate all wrong answers as soon as you can. • Why? • Sometimes, you can find an answer choice just by “process of elimination.”

  16. Paragraph Correction Today we will review another consept before we practice our standards. This grammer skill is considered advanced but I know that you will be sucessful if you listen atentively and focus.

  17. Tip of the Day • Read all questions and answers carefully • Pay special attention to words like except, least, and most • Why? • They are usually BEST ANSWER questions

  18. What does it mean to be active? • When you are active, you do an activity? • Example: You go on a run on the beach. • What does it mean to be passive? • You watch others do things. • Watch someone go on a beech run.

  23. Paragraph correction We will learn the difference between a hypen and a dash. Many people in america today does not know the distintion. The difference between these 2 element of grammer will be taught by Ms. roth.

  24. What’s a hyphen? What’s a dash? • A hyphen is the smaller line (-) that is used between compound words • Anti-American • Pro-Choice • Non-negotiable • Pre-test • Post-test • A dash is the longer line (—)used in a sentence to show a change in thought, an interuption, or a description • Johnny—the tallest student in the class—hit his head on the doorway.

When do we use a hyphen • Hyphens are generally used to separate a prefix from a root in compound words. • Compound words when the base is • Capitalized • Pro-America • A number • Post- 1990 • Eighty-eight • An abbreviation • Pre-IICMA • “Self” is used • Self-esteem • When more than two words are used • Father-in-law • When the prefix and first letter of the base are the same • Anti-intellectual

  36. All About Pronouns • ALL pronouns replace nouns • Some pronouns come at the beginning of a sentence. • Example: Ms. Roth likes coffee.  She likes coffee. • Some pronouns come at the end of a sentence. • Example: Ms. Roth sent the letter to Mrs. Wolfe.  Ms. Roth sent the letter to her.

All about adjectives • All adjectives describe nouns. • Example: Her shoes are beautiful. • Some adjectives show describe a noun by showing ownership. • Example: Ms. Roth’s hairis brown. • We call these adjectives possessive adjectives. • Example: Her hair is brown. • We need to make sure a possessive adjective belongs with its pronoun.

  46. Special Vocabulary • Don’t let the words trip you up… • Below is a list of words that you must know before your CST; you don’t want a definition preventing your success. Please add these words to the bottom of you “special vocabulary” handout. • Contradict: go against • Example: I hate chocolate. Snickers are my favorite candy. (The 2nd sentence contradicts the first) • Idiom: common expression whose meaning is not literal. • Example: The student dragged his feet into his class; he had a chip on his shoulder. • Restatement: Say a definition again (through a synonym) • Example. The loquacious student would not stop talking. • Contrast: Say a definition through its opposite (through an antonym) • Example: The student was not loquacious; I had to bribe her to say one word.

Special Vocab Continued • Affix: A suffix or a prefix • Cause and Effect: One event leads to another • Example: The student dropped a banana peel, and then Ms. Roth tripped. • Bias: A prejudice toward or against something • The teacher was biased towards poetry; that is the only thing her students read. • Stereotype: A generalization • All women are emotional. • Foreshadow: Predict events to come • Revise for improvement: Make a statement better by combining short sentences, separating run-on sentences, using conjunctions and modifiers correctly, put in active voice. • Plot: What happens in the story • Events that advance the plot: think of the different points on our plot diagrams.
