  1. Impact of GNIS on NHD By: Katy Hattenhauer ADEQ GIS Manager & AR State NHD Steward October 6, 2010

  2. History of NHD • NHD is standard hydrography coverage for the nation • NHD also features flow-direction capability • Study cause-and-effect relationships • Many other capabilities such as flow navigation in disasters • Therefore, ideally suited for The National Map • USGS NHD Stewardship program for States • Designed to help with maintenance of NHD • Signed MOU 10/15/08

  3. History of NHD in AR • Border states – how to fix problem areas • Policy making, policy changing decisions • AGIO webpage for meeting notes and status map

  4. Our Goal for Arkansas • Make state recommendations on strategy moving forward

  5. Organization of agencies • Most of our state agencies have their own water division to handle NHD-type issues • APCEC • AR GIS Board

  6. Water Issues in the State • A myriad of issues, mostly environmental concerns • Flow networks • GNIS Names

  7. NHD, TOPO, and GNIS

  8. NHD, TOPO, and GNIS • 43 segments needing to be fixed • 277 potential name changes due to the GNIS name and Stream name being different • 713 total unnamed streams in GNIS, but we do have a NHD stream name for them

  9. Ditches

  10. Ditches • Cross County, Arkansas • 1, 126 ditches • Not including some artificial paths which appear to be ditches • Some of these have a GNIS name of a creek (e.g., Twomile Creek) • The others do not have a GNIS name • Most are farm field runoff ditches

  11. Ditches • Discovered the naming issue when editing Reg 2 and 303d list • How do we name these? • State agencies are implementing their own naming system for ditches

  12. Latest Example Gold Creek Faulkner County, Arkansas Site Assessment

  13. Derogatory Names

  14. Derogatory Name • Should we change this ourselves as part of the NHD program? • Should we just leave it alone? • Even though we’ve had some complaints from the public, if the townspeople aren’t complaining, should we bother at all? • Whose call is it to make?

  15. Summary/Solutions • NHD GeoEdit Tool • Any suggestions are greatly appreciated for ditches!! • Submit forms for derogatory names
