  1. WP8: JRA8 - Internet for Sustainability Bart Lannoo (iMinds)

  2. Objectives • How could the Future Internet help to relieve the main problems affecting sustainability at planetary scale? • Greenhouse gas emissions need to be drastically diminished during the coming decades • European 20-20-20 objective: by 2020, • 20% increase of energy efficiency • 20% increase of renewable energy sources • 20% reduction of CO2 emissions • Sustainability of the Future Internet • Focusing on the full life cycle of Internet equipment • Future Internet for Sustainability • Using Internet to increase sustainability in other sectors • Multi-disciplinary approach taking into account the user • User adoption: are energy-efficient technologies used? • User behavior: potential vs. realistic energy savings WP8: JRA8 - Internet for Sustainability

  3. Tasks • R8.1: Assessment and reduction strategies for ICT energy consumption • R8.2: Investigating ‘ICT for Sustainability” tracks • R8.3: How to influence the user behavior • R8.4: How to be influenced by the user behavior: potential versus realistic benefit from ‘ICT for Green’ solutions Proposal to merge these two tasks, to increase the discussion platform WP8: JRA8 - Internet for Sustainability

  4. Overview of Work Performed • Delivery of D8.1, with a comprehensive overview of ICT energy consumption • Energy efficiency metrics and benchmarks • Global ICT footprint study • Specific use cases • Energy efficiency options • Discovering synergies between the JRA8 partners and defining several topics for further collaboration • Residential power plugs & social networks • Electrical vehicles in smart grids, with a focus on recharging and batteries • Data centers in smart grids, tackling the reduction of peak loads • Energy consumption in buildings, using sensor networks • Effective demand/response mechanisms, with special interest for user behavior WP8: JRA8 - Internet for Sustainability

  5. Achievements • Two workshops / conferences supported by EINS JRA8: • Symposium on “Energy Consumption of the Internet”, organized during ECOC2012, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Sep. 2012, co-organized by iMinds • SustainIT2012, Conference on Sustainable Internet and ICT for Sustainability, Pisa, Italy, Oct. 2012, organized by CNR / UCAM • Invited presentations at • GreenTouch members meeting • GNY Area Multimedia and Vision Meeting • IBM Research Center • Publications in: • JSAC, Optics Express, … WP8: JRA8 - Internet for Sustainability

  6. Deliverables • D8.1 - Overview of ICT energy consumption • Energy efficiency metrics and benchmarks • Global ICT footprint study • Specific use cases • Energy efficiency options WP8: JRA8 - Internet for Sustainability

  7. Links with other activities • Other JRAs • JRA1-2: evaluating the proposals in these JRAs with respect to the JRA8 goals • JRA3: aligning the used monitoring tools and measurement infrastructure • JRA4: paying attention to sustainability in standards and regulation • JRA5: taking into account privacy issues for monitoring energy consumption • JRA7: evaluating the impact of resilience on energy footprint • Otherresearch projects • FP7 NoE-TREND, FIT4GREEN, G-Lab Ener_G, All4Green • Other initiatives • GreenTouch WP8: JRA8 - Internet for Sustainability

  8. Future Plans • Finalization of D8.5.1 and D8.2 • Kick-off of collaborative work as presented above, with focus on: • Sustainability, which is broader than energy consumption in the use phase • Interdisciplinary work, taking into account the user behavior • Stronger collaboration with other JRAs, projects and initiatives • Organization of JRA8 workshop, most probably at SustainIT 2013 (Oct. 2013) WP8: JRA8 - Internet for Sustainability

  9. Conclusions • In year 1, JRA8 built the fundaments for steering the JRA in the right direction in the coming years • Collection of a lot of data that will be used as benchmark in further work • Discovering synergies between the JRA8 partners • Defining several topics for further collaboration • Main achievements • 1 deliverable, 2 workshops/conferences co-organized, several publications and presentations WP8: JRA8 - Internet for Sustainability
