  2. Principles of “NVC” • NVC: A system of symbolic behaviors that includes all forms of communication except words. • NVC can speak about: • Feelings • Relationships • NVC can ___ VC: • Reinforce • Contradict • Substitute

  3. Characteristics of NVC • Subconscious • Contextual • Ambiguous • Cultural

  4. Why learn NVC as a pro? • Confidence • Poise • Assertiveness • Immediacy

  5. Voice as NVC • Pitch: Highness and lowness of sound on a musical scale. • Range: The variations of high and low pitch a speaker can go. • Inflection: The rising and falling of pitch. • Volume: The loudness of a voice.

  6. Voice as NVC • Tone: A specific quality of a voice (shrill, harsh, pleasant, soothing?) • Duration • Rate: How fast or slow someone speaks. • Tempo: The rhythm of a person’s speech.

  7. Voice as NVC • Pause and silence • Express disapproval, apathy, or respect. • Used to separate thoughts, cause thoughts, or for dramatic effect. • Laughter: with them, or at them? • Vocalizations: sigh, whine, clearing throat, etc.

  8. Body Talk as NVC • Personal appearance • Grooming • Hair: • Clean • Away from face • Preferably styled conservatively • Face • Regulate facial hair • No visible facial piercings nor tattoos • Minimal make-up • Dress • Well-maintained • Professional appearance

  9. Body Talk as NVC • Kinesics (use of body in communication) • Posture: How you stand or sit. • Muscular tone and tension: Loosened up or tightened up?

  10. Body Talk as NVC • Movement: The way you move. • Gestures: The way you move your body to reinforce/substitute for VC. • Facial expressions: Same as gestures, but using your face. • Eye contact: Same as gestures, but using your eyes.
