  3. Thesis • William Faulkner has become a great writer through his culture, themes and styles, and a connection to his characters.

  4. Characters • In every book he wrote, there was some weird connection between a character and him.

  5. Culture • William grew up in Mississippi. The Southern culture that he grew up in helped create most of his major writings.

  6. Themes • The Impermanence of Existence and Identity • The Tension Between Words and Thoughts • The Relationship Between Childbearing and Death.

  7. Styles • Faulkner's style involves long, rolling sentences and experimentation with compound words and so-calledstream of consciousness. • He uses complicated genealogies, complex plots, and dense writing styles.

  8. Summary • As I Lay dying is based around the death of Addie, the mother. Addie had a wish, she wanted to be buried in the town of Jefferson. As they travel to the town, they encounter many problems between each other.
