  2. What Does an RN Do? Examples: • Giving medication to patient’s • Evaluates, observes, and assess patient’s. • Charting (recording patient’s medical care) • Analyze test results • Assists in surgical and non-surgical procedures.

  3. Required Education • Medical Professions/ Psychology (HS) • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) • Registered Nurses (RN) 2 or 4 years • Higher degrees receive higher pay. • Core Courses include Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, Chemistry, etc. • Nursing license (must pass state nursing examination)

  4. What Most People Do Not Know • Strict GPA requirements • Lower GPA may result in program denial • Other options available for lower scores.

  5. ASU Requirements (BSN) 1. First time freshman (resident) 2. GPA of 3.0 or above (If GED, score of at least 500) 3. 1040 SAT (math and critical reading only) or 4. ACT composite score of at least 22 or 5. Graduated top 25% of high school class 6.“Ideal candidates…at least a 3.5 GPA” (Brooks)

  6. What if my scores are not that high? • Bummer….. • Just Kidding! There is hope. After ASU’s initial selection process, if there are seats remaining in the nursing program ASU allows qualified students to compete for those vacant seats if: • Admitted to ASU for • Exercise & Wellness, Health Sciences, Kinesiology, or Nutrition • Must be in Good Academic Standing • minimum GPA of 3.25 during pre-requisite courses.   7. (U of I BSN) • First Year Freshmen not eligible for direct admittance. Guaranteed Admission in Upper Division Nursing • Act of at lest 28 , or • SAT of at least 1240, or • Ranked in top 15% of graduating class (Brooks) • Transfer Students • minimum cumulative transfer GPA of 2.75 • minimum 2.50 natural science grade point average of 2.50.   9. Cons • Extremely busy • High Nurse to Patient Ratio • Emotionally straining • Physically exhausting • Angry patients • Unfortunate results. • Death, disease, lawsuits (Labor)

  10. Want to know something cool? • A century ago, nurses weren’t allowed to be married…and certainly not pregnant. (Brooks) • Entry-level nurses, or first-year nurses, earn more than the average college graduate who takes a job fresh out of school (Brooks)

Answer:“I always knew that I wanted to enter into a field that would allow me to help others. The healthcare field was the perfect route to achieve this goal.” • What area of healthcare do you enjoy the most? Answer:“I mostly work in labor and delivery which also includes surgery. I enjoy Labor and Delivery the most because I am able to witness the many miracles of birth and assist in bringing a new life into the world.”
