  1. STRESS MANAGEMENT Personality and Stress Part II **Attitude** Optimists vs.Pessimists

  2. Nature - Unique Genetics • What were you born with? • Intellect – Cognitive ability How capable are we of analyzing events outside of us (stressors) and making good choices on how to deal with those outside events? • Personality – How others see us Born prone to A or B? Were we born an optimist/pessimist? Were we born an introvert/extrovert?

  3. Nurture–Unique Environment • Upbringing/outside influences • Formative years – Significant others Significant life events • Continued human development Significant others Formal Education Profession/career Significant life events

  4. Nature and Nurture integrated • Your reaction (or action) regarding stressful events is determined by both your nature and your past nurture experiences. This reaction is characterized by your assessment of the event and what you are telling yourself regarding that event. • The degree of stress you experience is determined by your “perceptions” of the “situation” much more than it is determined by the situation itself. Example: 1. This is not good, but I can handle it. 2. This is terrible and I can’t stand it.

  5. This is terrible and I can’t stand it. • Pessimists point of view (self talk) 1. Perceives the “bad” in everything Murphy’s Law – “If something can go wrong, it will” Always predicts failure – 2. Life is just a series of “problems” Life is done to the person Life is a constant struggle 3. Distress is the “Mode” Seldom, if ever, in Eustress At times in Lackstress

  6. This is not good, but I can handle it • Optimist point of view (self talk) 1. Sees the good in most everything Looks for and sees the silver linings in clouds May at times wear “rose colored glasses” 2. Life is a joy to experience Challenges are looked at a opportunities Is grateful for all the “joys” of life 3. Eustress is the “Mode” Recognizes the reality of distress/challenges Uses Lackstress to recharge batteries

  7. Stress and the benefits of Optimism • Optimist’s views carry advantages 1. Superior health (Harvard Research) 2. Greater achievement (swimmer study) 3. Persistence (Turn failure into success) 4. Emotional health (C. R. vs. Medication) 5. Increased longevity (Cancer patients) 6. Manage stress more effectively The glass is always half full rather than it being half empty!
