  3. What does the word ZAKAH / ZAKAT mean? Means to ‘cleanse’ or ‘purify’. As the person gives up a share of his/her wealth they become cleansed from selfishness and greed.

  4. Title = Zakah http://www.hidaya.org/zakat/calculator.asp • The Hadith says, ”He who eats and drinks while his brother goes hungry, is not one of us.” • What does this mean? • To calculate zakah= • http://www.hidaya.org/zakat/calculator.asp • Research zakah= • http://www.islamonline.net/english/introducingislam/Worship/Zakah/article01.shtml

  5. Zakah • Zakah is a portion of one’s wealth that must be given to the poor or to other specified causes. • The word “zakah” comes from the verb meaning to purify or cleanse. • It is the third Pillar of Islam and is obligatory for all those who are financially able.

  6. How much? • Zakah means the giving of a specific share of one’s wealth and savings to persons or causes that Allah (God) mentions in the Qur’an. • The normal share to be paid is two and a half percent of one’s saved earnings. • This applies to cash, bank savings and jewelry

  7. Who receives Zakah money? Muslims studying Islam The poor and the needy Travellers who need money Zakah goes to: People in debt New Muslims Schools, Hospitals, Libraries, Mosques Prisoners of war

  8. Why? • Paying zakat is Fard (compulsory). • The Qur'an says that only those who pay zakat are in the "brotherhood of faith“ • The Holy Qur'an also says that Zakat purifies assets and creates virtue • Zakât is the major economic means for “establishing social justice and leading the Muslim society to prosperity and security. “

  9. Once a year – Muslims must give Zakah which is 2.5% of their savings to the poor. All Muslims who are financially able and past the age of puberty MUST pay Zakah. How much is 2.5%? If someone has £1000 savings – then £25 MUST be given to those who need it. Muslims believe that he/she who does not give Zakah is not considered a Muslim!

  11. Muslims believe: Everything that they own has been given to them by God. They are simply looking after what God has given them. The money they have should be used wisely and in a way which God will like. This means giving things to those who need them. The poor have a right to share the wealth that belongs to the rich people. Zakah makes sure this happens and that no one is left really poor in the society.

  12. What are the benefits of giving Zakah? • Obeying God-being a true muslim. • Freeing oneself from the love of possessions and greed • protecting society – so that the poor don’t feel that they need to turn to crime such as stealing. • Acknowledging that whether we are rich or poor is God's choice So we should help those he has chosen to make poor. • Zakah makes a fairer society, so that the poor don’t get poorer and the rich don’t get richer.

  13. Sadaqah Sadaqah is any extra payments made above Zakat. It is also any good deed that is done for the sake of Allah, rather than for selfish reasons. Brainstorm as many types of need as you can think of: Sadaqah To help poor members of your community To relieve people from debt

  14. Sadaqah may involve a person giving their time, their money or their prayer. Read through the following list. Write each way of helping someone in need. Then for each one, decide which form of sadaqah would be most appropriate and give an example of how it would help.
