  1. Social Studies Standards 1. History of the United States • Ela. 1 Make perspective and well developed connections to prior knowledge Guiding Question – How did Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines benefit from the Spanish American War? The Anti-Imperialist League published cartoons illustrating the way the United States government thought about her overseas processions. Who do you think the man in this cartoon represents? Who do you think the child represents?

  2. Vocabulary The Teller Amendment – A proclamation made by the United States government stating that the United States would not interfere or had no interest in taking control of Cuba. The Teller Amendment was attached to a resolution, written and passed by Congress , insisting Cuba was independent and asking Spain to withdraw from the island immediately. This led to the Spanish government declaring war on the United States in February of 1898.

  3. Rough Riders – a group of soldiers famous for their heroism while fighting under the command of Theodore Roosevelt in Cuba. The Rough Riders under the leadership of Teddy Roosevelt participated in the famous charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba. Four African Americans from the Rough Riders received the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery.

  4. Mini Lesson – analyze and then summarize - Read Aloud Think Aloud “ The Treaty of Paris” The Treaty of Paris After Yorktown, only a few small battles took place. Lacking the money to pay for a new army, Great Britain entered into peace talks with America. Benjamin Franklin had a key role in the negotiations.      Delegates took more than two years to come to a peace agreement. In the Treaty of Paris of 1783, Great Britain recognized the independence of the United States. The treaty also set America’s borders. A separate treaty between Britain and Spain returned Florida to the Spanish. British leaders also accepted American rights to settle and trade west of the original thirteen colonies.       At the war’s end, Patriot soldiers returned to their homes and families. The courage of soldiers and civilians had made America’s victory possible. As they returned home, George Washington thanked his troops for their devotion. “I…wish that your latter days be as prosperous as your former ones have been glorious.”

  5. How were the British and The Americans effected by the Treaty of Paris? Analyze – take apart

  6. The Treaty of Paris – Summary In 1783 the Treaty of Paris was a victory for the United States. It was signed and agreed to by the British and The United States. The United States received its independence from Britain. Britain also gave the United States land that extended the new nations' boundaries as far west as the Mississippi River. The people of the United States were allowed to move west of the original borders of the Thirteen colonies. The United States also received trading rights in the new territory. The British also surrendered Florida back to Spain in the treaty.

  7. Work Period:– Read (with your group in alternating sentences) “Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.” Analyze and summarize each of the readings. Use the format modeled in today’s mini lesson. The question you have to answer is today’s guiding question. Be sure to identify the significant facts that will contribute to your summary. How did Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines benefit from the Spanish American War?

  8. Closing: What do you think were some of the long term effects of American Imperialism in Latin America and around the world?
