  2. Presurvey • What are the biggest ideas in biology that you want students to remember for at least 40 years?

Overview and Goals of Workshop • Familiarize participants with the state CIM standards and (draft) district standards for the class. • Design logical and engaging maps through the curriculum to meet standards. • Reinforce use of best practices, including Understanding by Design (UbD), focusing particularly on the learning cycle model, authentic performance tasks, essential questions, inquiry, group work, differentiation, and professional collegial groups. • Familiarize participants with the new biology text and the other adopted texts. • Train participants in use of adopted lab equipment and share best labs.

Emphasize teaching the use of lab equipment that others might not be familiar with, fit to the standards and best practices. • Think-write-share-decide-implement Emphasize big ideas about the labs. • What essential questions does the lab address? • What will you expect students to UNDERSTAND based on the lab? • What process skills will they use? • What makes the lab important? Where it fits on the grid. • What makes the lab effective? What best practices it employs.
