  3. Married Couple • Establishing roles within the family: • Learning to be a family • Establishing roles as husband and wife • Decision makers

  4. Couple w/ Preschoolers • Play the roles of: • Nurturers (Caregivers) • Protectors • Teacher • Doctor/nurse • Playmate

  5. Couple w/ School Age • Roles include: • Nurturers (Caregivers) • Protectors • Teacher • Doctor/nurse • Cook

  6. Driver • Counselor & Coach • Activities Director • And more

  7. Launching • Roles may include: • Counselor/Advisor • Friend • Supporter & Confidant

  8. Empty Nest • Roles are similar to the launching cycle but may also include: • Grandparent

  9. Aging • May still fulfill some of the same roles as in earlier stages of the family life cycle

  10. Roles may become reversed with the children taking on the role of caregiver

  11. For Discussion • As the family life cycle continues into aging, what roles do you see parents playing? What about their grown children? • How would roles differ for families who remain childless?
