  2. The Female Reproductive System

  3. What is the female reproductive system? • The female reproductive system is the location where the ovum is created, stored and released. • It is also responsible for the nourishment of the embryo and fetus.

  4. What are the parts of the female reproductive system? • Vagina • Uterus • Ovaries • Fallopian Tubes • Cervix • Endometrium • Menstruation

  5. The vagina is a fibro muscular tubular tract leading from the uterus to the exterior of the body. Vagina

  6. Uterus • The uterus is essential in the sexual response system by directing blood flow to the pelvis and to the external genitalia. • It also cares for the fertilized egg during pregnancy.

  7. Ovaries • Ovaries are oval shaped . The ovary (for a given side) is located in the lateral wall of the pelvis in a region called the ovarian fossa. • The ovaries aren't attached to the fallopian tubes but to the outer layer of the uterus via the ovarian ligaments. Usually each ovary takes turns releasing eggs every month; however, if there was a case where one ovary was absent or dysfunctional then the other ovary would continue providing eggs to be released.

  8. Fallopian Tubes • The tube allows passage of the egg from the ovary to the uterus. • There are two types of cells within the female fallopian tubes.

  9. Cervix • The lower portion of the female reproductive system. • During menstruation the cervix slightly opens up to let the endometrium shed. • The cervix also opens up during childbirth to let the child have room to come out.

  10. Endometrium • The endometrium is the wall or lining of the uterus. • Every month it sheds, unless an egg gets fertilized. • Another word for the endometrium is the uterine wall.

  11. Menstruation • Is when the uterine wall sheds and blood comes out of the vagina. • The average menstrual cycle is about 28 days. • The average female begins menstruation at the age of 12.

  12. The meeting of a sperm and egg • When a male ejaculates and it stays in the vagina. • Then after from that an egg is fertilized and a zygote has been created. • From the zygote it turns into a fetus, from fetus it turns into a baby. • After 9 months of pregnancy a baby is born.
