Figurative Language. not to be taken literally, or word for word stirs up your imagination adds depth and color to writing. Simile: a comparison between two unlike things using the words "like" or "as". I am hungry as a horse. You run like a rabbit. She is happy as a clam.

  1. Figurative Language • not to be taken literally, or word for word • stirs up your imagination • adds depth and color to writing

  2. Simile: a comparison between two unlike things using the words "like" or "as"

  3. I am hungry as a horse. You run like a rabbit. She is happy as a clam. He is sneaky as a snake.

  4. Metaphor: comparison between 2 unlike things using a form of “to be” (not “like” or “as”)

  5. The girl was a fish in the water. The clown was a feather floating away.

  6. Hyperbole: a huge exaggeration used to heighten effect

  7. She soared through the sky a million miles. It rained cats and dogs!

  8. Personification: giving the qualities of a person to an animal, an object, or an idea

  9. The flowers danced in the wind. The friendly gates welcomed us. The Earth coughed and choked in all of the pollution.

  10. Alliteration: (a sound device) repeated consonant sounds occurring at the beginning of words or within words

  11. Stan the strong surfer saved several swimmers on Saturday. Tiny Ted talks too timidly.

  12. Onomatopoeia: (a sound device) the use of words that mimic sounds
