  1. Criteria E Language Practice

  2. Content Objectives • We can understand that there are different language demands (language tasks and functions) and therefore multiple opportunities in different content areas to provide regular opportunities to practice and apply new language and content knowledge in English. • We can use different strategies to promote the use of oral language practice in class.

  3. Language Objectives • We can listen for the “sound of learning” in the classroom by actively listening to student talk and interactions. • We can write about/ reflect upon the effectiveness of a language practice strategy in the classroom.

  4. Talk Time 1)Turn and share: Why is student talk important in the classroom? 2) Now rate yourself on the amount and types of talk-time you use in your classroom

  5. Language Functions: • A specific reason to use language to meet a specific need or complete a task • Examples: inquiring/asking for information, stating opinions, making requests, giving advice, • Sounds like a language objective!

  6. Language Task: • The accomplishing an undertaking that requires a number of coordinated linguistic functions. • Examples: Going to the doctor, Traveling somewhere on vacation, writing an essay for English class! Using the Scientific Method! Participating in a sport! Rehearsing for a band/chorus/orchestra concert!

  7. Choose Meaningful Tasks!

  8. Reader-Writer-SpeakerResponse Trios 1) Reader: read aloud the information on your assigned Language Function to your trio and explain the information/ graphics in your own words 2) Triad together: discuss how they could use the suggested graphic organizers and sentence starters in a lesson that would rely on their given language function to produce oral language/generate student talk time 3) Writer: summarize the trio’s responses onto poster/chart paper; include text and pictures 4) Speaker: Share-out the information to the class.

  9. How else can we promote language practice? • In your content area/grade level groupings, take some time to look through the Cooperative Learning Tools packet of strategies by Dr. Virginia Rojas and pick your top 5 “favorites” • And annotate (on post-it notes) each one with ideas on how you can tailor it to your content area/ unit or lesson of study • Make sure you log these wonderful ideas for you to keep!

  10. Put it into practice • Commit to 1-2 instructional strategies to implement in your own classrooms. After trying it: 1)Complete an evaluation; recording the amount of student-talk time Is everyone contributing? , listening to student responses and noting the speech quality, language functions being used, other language specific observations and evaluating its effectiveness. 2) Write a reflection about their lesson, and plan for “next steps” or action plan to promote language development practice within their classrooms.
