  1. Town of Pelham Fire Department Proposed Fire Department Headquarters

  2. In 2004, the Board of Selectman appointed a committee consisting of one selectman, 6 fire fighters, and 8 citizens. • After hearing the concerns of the citizens about the proposed station in 2007, the town administrator, fire chief, and board of selectmen organized a professional construction committee. • Construction committee consisting of an architect, construction manager, and an owners project manager. The History

  3. As a result of critical review by our construction team, economies were discovered that reduced the overall size of the station to it’s present recommended size of 19,000 square feet, at a cost of $4.26 million. • This cost and project proposal was the result of Trident Project Advantage Group, Eckman Construction, and Sumner Davis Architects, along with Board of Selectmen, and Fire Department Personnel, performing a complete space needs analysis and cost analysis. • In addition the town explored the option of expanding the current station and it was found not to be cost effective. History Cont.

  4. The services provided by our Fire Department are considerably different today than they were in 1972 when the existing fire station was built.  • In 1972, the fire department was an all volunteer organization working out of the old town hall building. That fire station was designed for much smaller fire trucks. • In 1972 when the current station was built it was designed as a fire and police station. The station was never designed to staff a full time fire department The Need

  5. When the town built the current station, there was no idea or thought that the department would become a full time organization. • In 1988, the first full time employee of the fire department, joined the organization, and it has expanded to include emergency medical services. • There are plans to redesign the current town center to address traffic concerns. Those plans require for the current fire station to be moved to the Village Green. The Need Cont.

  6. Presently we have a compliment of 19 full time personnel, 1 Chief, 4 Lieutenants, 12 fire fighter EMT’s, a fire inspector and office manager. Our call volume has increased 25% in 5 years alone. • In 1974, the department managed 151 calls, compared to 1,427 in 2007. An increase in call volume by 845%. • The fire department also provides full time advanced life support. For more information www.acls.net The Need Cont.

  7. Today, much of our equipment is stored outside, increasing wear and tear and causing rising maintenance costs, as well as delay in emergency responses. • Fire fighter response is delayed because equipment is spaced so tight they cannot adequately get into their equipment and into the trucks without pulling the truck outside. • There has been a dramatic increase in the size of fire engines. 11 foot wide bays were adequate in 1972 but today’s standard require 14 feet for safe operation. 17. A owner’s representative has been hired to monitor the project from the beginning to end which eliminates misunderstandings, keeps the owners (Town Selectmen) informed and allows for a timely decision making even when the pace of construction picks up. • In an effort to bring this project to completion on time and on budget, the town is using the construction manager approach to this project bringing the Architect and builder together during the design phase resulting in a better cost analysis and eliminating costly change orders. The Conclusion

  18. Approval of this investment will allow for the removal of the old fire station and increase the options to solve the traffic problems of the town center. • Approval of this investment will provide the firemen with a safe and healthy work environment. • Locating the fire station off the Village Green will complete the plans for this complex and, like the addition of the elementary school, will be an impressive addition which increases pride and value to our town. The Conclusion Cont.

  19. A $4.26 million dollar bond. • Vote March 2008 • New fire station on the Village Green will complete the Towns objective of having a beautiful central location for town complexes. • A healthy and improved work environment. • No more having apparatus sitting outside. • A reduction in response time delays due to lack of space.
