Digital Literacy Study 'Net Generation at Cornell *Fluency" with information technology may require more intellectual abilities than the rote learning of software and hardware associated with "computer literacy," but the focus is still on the technology itself. Information literacy, on the other hand, is an intellectual framework for understanding, finding, evaluating, and using information--activities which may be accomplished in part by fluency with information technology, in part by sound investigative methods, but most important, through critical discernment and reasoning. - ACRL Student Videos: eCommons@Cornell http://ecommons.cornell.edu/handle/1813/13353

Summary of Key Findings • Most students were social media users but did not use blogs or wikis to create content in critical ways • Most students had not used or considered technologies such as podcasts, Google Maps, and videos as ways of making meaning (or having meaningful interactions) • Most students claimed they could use PowerPoint (but that is about the extent of their “technology” knowledge)

Summary of Key Findings II • Though many students in the study did complete some sort of research paper, for some, research was not part of the curriculum in any sustained, meaningful way • Research and writing were part of many non-English department courses • When it came to finding and using information, students said they skim, look for quotes, and type in key words • Most students wanted more information on how to use the library to do research • Most students went first to Google for any information they needed (then Wikipedia)
