  2. Do Now: On a piece of paper to be handed in: • 1. Name all the 5 layers of the atmosphere from lowest to highest in elevation. • 2. How did Earth’s ancient atmosphere form?

  3. Earth’s atmosphere • Atmosphere is a thin layer of gases surrounding Earth.

  4. Why is Earth’s Atmosphere important? • It contains oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water for life. • It regulates the temperature within a range for organisms to survive in. • It protects organisms from harmful rays and meteor strikes.

  5. Where did the Earth’s Atmosphere come from? • Volcanos released hot gas that surrounded ancient Earth and created the atmosphere. • Most of the atmosphere was only water vapor and carbon dioxide. Which types of organisms were able to survive in this type of atmosphere? • Plants were able to perform photosynthesis and release oxygen into the atmosphere.

Layers of the atmosphere • Troposphere (surface to 15km): • This is the layer that is closest to Earth. • Warmest part of the troposphere is near Earth’s surface. • Stratosphere (15km to 50km): • This is where the ozone layer is located. • This layer absorbs harmful UV rays from the sun. • Mesosphere(50km to 85km)/Thermosphere(85km to 500km): • Meteors burn up in this layer. • Radio waves travel long distances in this layer. • Ions from the sun strike air molecules to form auroras. • Exosphere (above 500km): • Pressure and density are extremely low. • Air molecules can escape to space.
