    • Where the news happens is important, the closer it is, generally the more newsworthy.

  • Hard News and Soft News
    • Hard news: news that is about a serious or important topic and has a sense of immediacy to it.
      • Ex. Speeches, news conferences, crimes, fires, major weather stories, etc.
    • Soft news: stories or articles that are about ordinary people who overcome obstacles or accomplish something noteworthy

    • Breaking News
      • News that is happening now and that journalists must cover on a tight deadline
        • Go to the scene, report what is going on
        • Witness firsthand what is happening
        • Collect video for web and broadcast reports
        • Requires constant updating

  • Usually a large investigative process – a story that you find, not one that finds you (generally).
  • Many forms:
    • An investigative reporter who exposes wrongdoing that results in gov’t action to fix the problem
    • An in-depth report on crime in your city that uses statistics to tell where it is safe and unsafe.
