  10. Sweet Caroline

  11. Listening Guide: Sweet Caroline • Intro uses repetition and ascension • Narrow Range • Biggest variations are in regards to increasing dynamics and speed • Easily remembered lyrics which flow very well with the rhythm • Simple pitch • A KARAOKE FAVORITE!!!

  12. Forever in Blue Jeans

  13. Listening Guide: Forever in Blue Jeans • Begins happyand low key- continues to grow in its dynamics both vocally and instrumentally. • Undertone of sexuality within the lyrics of the chorus, without going over the top: “Baby tonight, baby tonight by the fire, all alone you and I… nothing around but the sound of my heart and your sigh.” • Makes me want to go out and buy some blue jeans!! Apparently many people had the same reaction to this song, as sales blue jeans increased upon its release.

  14. Love on the Rocks

  15. Listening Guide: Love on the Rocks • Simple accompaniment • Minimal repetition in the lyrics, other than in the chorus. • Intensity builds through dynamics vocally and instrumentally • Great depth of emotion that is displayed vocally • Begins by stating “Pour me a drink and I’ll tell you some lies” yet at the end he says “Pour me a drink and I’ll tell you my lies”, I take that as the person in the song is taking ownership of his own story

  16. Cracklin’ Rosie

  17. Listening Guide: Cracklin’ Rosie • Happy and upbeat tempo • The chorus builds in its intensity, like it is in a constant ascension. It feels as if I am being taken on a ride. • Vocals performed effortlessly • Section of chorus where he sings a capella, builds emotion

  18. “I’m an imperfect emotional being trying to figure out some way to give some kind of substance and meaning to my life. I write these little songs and go and sing them in a recording studio and, later, in front of a lot of people. It seems an odd way to gain an inner sense of acceptance of the self. But it’s what I do. I’ve never tried to be what I’m not. I am what I am: raggedy, over-the-top, heartfelt, emotional, reflective, passionate, angry and sad at times, which began long before I ever started writing song.” Neil Diamond
