  1. Absolute & Relative Chronology Timeline For 2nd period only 1. One person-Title the Large Sheet of Construction Paper= Absolute OR Relative? Unit 1 America In Transition 2. 2nd person=cuts the strips and letters( you will put them back into envelope at end of period) 3. 3rd person=Write the following dates under the dashes in chronological order= 1865,1875,1885,1895,1900

  2. Relative & Absolute Chronology…Cheesy words with an easy meaning! Everything has it’s purpose and place in the world right? We are going to be spend time this year understanding how historical events shape our world & defined an era. Absolute Chronology= Is your standard list with dates from earliest to latest Relative Chronology= Doesn’t have any dates just which came first, second etc. Archeologist use this term when studying artifacts that are not easy to identify and they essentially match the artifact to actual artifacts KNOWN to be made during that year/era.

  3. Absolute & Relative Chronology: Unit 1 America In Transition Go to your next blank page in your journal. Turn your journal landscape and copy the timeline exactly like the large timeline your group has. Each group has a large piece of construction paper with a timeline from 1865-1900. Using the strips A-H decide w/ your group where you know or think you know where the events go. Then below each decide if the event is Absolute or Relative Hint: Think of what you already know. How can some of these events come before or after others? Use common sense first and the relation some of these events have to one another (cause and effect) i.e. , 18th Amendment in 1920 (A), Prohibition negatively impacts America by making Bootlegging &organized crime a profitable business. (R) 3-5 min. Debrief

  4. America In Transition • South surrenders at Appomattox Courthouse; Civil War comes to an end. • Railroads built in the West promoted settlers to start a new life, and clashed with the Plains tribes. • Alexander Graham Bell sends the first telephone message, “Mr. Watson-come here- I want to see you.” • Statue of Liberty as a gift from France will be viewed as a symbol for a new beginning in America. • The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Tragedy awoke many unions to stand up against deplorable working conditions in NYC. • Business giants like Rockefeller & Carnegie employed capitalist business tactics in hopes of reaping rewards for their risks they took. • In Plessyvs Ferguson the term “separate but equal” was another example of how Jim Crow laws in the South were used to intimidate blacks. • Nativism grew stronger as more immigrants especially southern & eastern Europe (Ellis) & Asians (Angel) brought cultural differences & skills.
