  3. Anatomical Structure and Location: Parts of the large intestine: Ascending colon – the first part of the large intestine. Transverse colon – the longest and most moveable part of the colon. Descending colon – passes downwards through the left hypochondrium and lumbar regions. Sigmoid colon - the part of the large intestine that is closest to the rectum and anus. It forms a loop that averages about 40 cm. in length, and normally lies within the pelvis, but on account of its freedom of movement it is liable to be displaced into the abdominal cavity. Rectum – the final portion of the large intestine, terminating in the anus.

Function • Finish up the remaining process of digestion. • The large intestine simply absorbs vitamins that are created by bacteria inhabiting the colon. • It also absorbs water and compact faeces. • Stores faecal matter in the rectum until it is eliminated through the anus. • Thus, the large intestine is responsible for passing along solid waste.
