Duties and Responsibilities • Diagnoses and treats eye diseases. • Can prescribe glasses/ contacts. • Can perform surgery on eye as well. • Can work individually in their own practices, or in a hospital. • Some work long irregular hours, but most have a scheduled day with an occasional emergency visit.

  3. Earnings and Available Jobs • Earnings depend on geographic location. • The median annual salary is $353,110 in 2011. • Receive paid vacations, holidays, and sick days. Some employers pay for education as well. • Ophthalmologists had 28,000 jobs in 2008. • Job amount expected to grow by .2 by 2018. • The amount of jobs will increase due to the demand for high quality, personal care.

Suggested Education • Biology, chemistry, physics, sociology, and English are suggested high school courses. • Between 8-10 years of college study is required. • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy Degree. • Medical school, passing a licensed test, and completing a graduate medical education.
