Background • It’s a grass-roots, Spanish-English, national campaign by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) to create mass awareness of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and higher education opportunities for Hispanics. • SHPE Noche de Ciencias (Family Science Night) is a bilingual program for Hispanic parents and pre-college youth targeting Hispanic communities across the United Status. • Goal to reach 100 communities and touch 10,000 Latino minds annually. • In the Silicon Valley, this will be our 7th Noche de Ciencias since 2008. • Davis Intermediate School hosting 2nd Noche de Ciencias (2010, 2012)

  3. Location & Time • Davis Intermediate School 5035 Edenview DriveSan Jose, CA 95111 (408) 227-0616 • Wednesday, April 4, 2012 • 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm • Setup begins at 4:30pm • Volunteers arrive at 5:00pm • Expecting over 100 students and parents • Please wear t-shirts with company or college logo

Agenda • 4:30pm – 6:00pm: Setup • 6:00pm – 6:15pm: Registration/Food • 6:15pm – 6:30pm: Introduction/Welcome (Bilingual) • 6:30pm – 8:00pm: Hands-On Activities (Students) • 6:30pm – 8:00pm: College Choices / Financial Aid (Parents, Bilingual) • 8:00pm – 8:15pm: Closing Remarks • 8:15pm – 9:00pm: Clean-up

  8. Dual Parent Workshops • 1st Half (45 mins) • Presentation about college preparation and financial aid for their children (lead by Moderator) • 2 volunteers answer any questions the parents may have about preparing their son and/or daughter for college • 2nd Half (45mins) • TBA

  9. Other Volunteer Roles • Help register all students and parents including volunteers • Help distribute gift bags to every student • Taking pictures during the event • Help serve prepared food from Mexico Lindo to everyone (students, parents, and volunteers) • Help direct traffic and assist any students or parents with questions • Help with setup and clean-up
