Use of CAHAN The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires all states to have a Health Alert Network (HAN) CAHAN is the official Public Health Alerting System used and administered by the California Department of Public Health CAHAN use and training is available to local public health jurisdictions, hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, Indian health clinics, and other public health partners for emergency planning and response to public health events

  3. CAHAN Expansion Project • January 2009-October 2009 • 98 Workshops offered in 20 counties • 1,156 total participants • 416 - Hospitals • 250 – Public health partners (CDPH-L&C, law, fire, schools, MRC, ARC, EMS) • 176 - LHDs • 157 - Clinics • 138 - LTC facilities • 19 - Indian Health clinics

CAHAN Alerts • Sample of 332 alerts • 4 month time period • Only included actual alerts (exercises, tests, cancelled alerts, and hospital codes were left out) • Alert Topics included: • H1N1 guidance, information, and reporting • H1N1 conference calls, public information materials, and risk communications • EOC/DOC activations, deactivations, and status changes • HAvBED reporting requirements • Training announcements

Current CAHAN Projects • Enhanced computer based CAHAN training • Increase participation for facilities unable to travel to live training • CAHAN Upgrade (4.7-5.1) • Increased telecommunications capacity (phone and fax) • Automatic password reset • All-license access to the document library • Formatting to alert messages • Can now have hyperlinks, line breaks, bullets, fonts, colors, etc • Attachments to alerts can be included • Call-in and retrieve alerts
