The Order of Things • Get Their Attention • Referral • Some aspect of marketing campaign • Editorial, story, credit line • Publicity, story about you or your accomplishments • Endorsement ie: Canon Lens of Month • Blog, Twitter, some comment somewhere • Web Search • Photo portal, sourcebook, association page, find a photographer, stock library, • Public show, gallery, corporate office, ad you shot, work you did, • Face to face; elevator, party, coffee shop, networking event, overheard at dinner, stopped in the park, kids track meet… • Many other possibilities

  3. Checkin You Out • Conversation • Go your Website • Research; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, • Talk to other professionals • Web Search • Ebsco, Hoovers, Associations, Stock, Galleries, Collections

  4. What Can they find out • Biography, artist statement, anything you want them to find • FB comments, humor, recommendations LinkedIn, • News, stories, publicity, articles, • References from people you’ve worked with • Not just clients, models, assistants, camera store clerks, other photographers opinions

  5. Connection • Email • Phone Call • Face to Face meeting • Drop in at studio unlikely unless gallery event • Party • Event

  6. Next Step • Request for portfolio • Request for meeting • Review of contract for consideration • Ask for Specialized Lightbox of images • Lots can be determined from the initial conversation, through email or on the phone, it’s an interview, don’t forget it.

  7. Actions Taken • How to follow up • Do you attempt to control follow through • Do you simply follow through with request • Thank you note, follow up email, card, promo, phone call

Drop Off Books • Drop off for Client view at their pace • Many agencies call in lots of books • Many reps drop off lots of books • Always include biz cards and promo materials • Ask for signature list, email addresses, any comments from coordinator or art buyer • Follow through with thank yous, promos, marketing materials, • Ask for referrals

Portfolio Showings • Always do your research before the meeting • How will you show • Book only, video, tearsheets, more than one book • Do you pace or let them pace • Is it one on one, a conference room with many people, a free for all, • Did you bring treats, gifts, swag? • Peers say anything about this person or this firm? • Perception • Your portfolio, how you handle yourself, judge a man by his questions, your dress, your hair, articulation, jargon, humor, comfort level, breath, demeanor • How long are you willing to wait • How do you handle re-scheduling • Did you re-confirm the meeting • Purpose of the meeting; informational, review, specific project, in the neighborhood… • Follow up from this meeting • Referrals

Request for proposal, estimate • Often, first job is a small test • All facets of operation and production are under review • Did you cover all the bases, ask the right questions, prepare adequately, • Numbers in line, right team in place, usage or license right for the project • Passion, expertise, team player or super star, • Production team, details

Produce the Project • Managing all production details and communication • Frequent or infrequent, how much is TMI? • Is communication through you, rep, producer, assistant, or many members of team? • Organized, Creative, Innovative, follow directions, find new solutions, variations • Promise • Deliver

  12. The Shoot • Cover all the details • Cool, calm, confident, creative, collaborative • Entertaining yet professional, • I ask questions. Tell stories • Thoughtful, strategic, insightful coverage, • Editing is essential • Finished files are Raw for clients, IMHO

Follow Through and Delivery • On time, budget, results • Delivered physically, on disk, on drive, ftp, download, print, package, email… • Branding!!! • Invoicing • The Wrap • The Ask • More work, critique, stay on lists, follow up, interests, opportunities, collaborations, • Follow up details
