  1. Ground-based observations available for international land-product validation: An introduction 2012 CEOS Phenology LPV workshop 13 September 2012 Compiled by Jake Weltzin With appreciation to all contributing ground-based networks and datasets

  2. a project of the USA-NPN Nationally distributed observation sites

  3. 2011 Individual deciduous trees Mean days for # of observations Breaking Buds Increasing leaf size First day of breaking leaf buds Leaves

  4. a project of the USA-NPN Data, metadata, documentation freely available

  5. The Australian Phenology Network - ClimateWatch Earthwatch Institue with the Bureau of Meteorology and The University of Melbourne

  6. Alberta Plantwatch • 26 years data (1987 to present) on first/ mid/ full bloom • First 20 years already digitized: 47,000 records from about 650 observers • 25 plant species (23 native species, 2 introduced) • Leafing data since 2000 for Populus tremuloides (aspen), lilac, red maple, larch • Plan: data available approx. Sept 2013 • See plantwatch.naturealberta.ca • And www.plantwatch.ca

  7. Citizen science reports in Sweden Vegetation period No of reports 2008 - 2012 Citizen science network 2012

  8. Birch - an example species Distribution of birch leaf unfolding obs. Birch leaf phenology, different observers Leaf unfolding Pros Known Anon. Day ofyear Autumn leaves Latitude

  9. Status and Availability of Ground Phenology Observations/Networks - Ireland • 4 international phenological gardens with long-term data (>40 years) on a suite of trees • 10 international phenological gardens with short-term data (>2 years) on trees • 6 sites with 2 native species of trees (>2 years) • Some citizen science data • School students • Nature Watch • Phenology trail • Data not quality controlled

  10. Initiative started Fall 2011 • Borrows software (Nature’s Notebook), protocols and educational material from USA-NPN • Will rely on citizen scientists • Priority given to plants • Multi-institutional, supported through voluntary contributions, no dedicated funding (yet!) • Expected to be operational Spring 2013 • Coordinator: • Nüzhet Dalfes (dalfes@itu.edu.tr) [Istanbul Tech. University]

PEP725 – Pan European Phenology Database Elisabeth Koch, Wolfgang Lipa, Susanne Zach-Hermann, Markus Ungersböckpep725@zamg.ac.at PEP725 isfinancedbythe Austrian Federal MinistryforScience&Research, ZAMG and EUMETNET The main objective of PEP725 is to promote and facilitate phenological research by delivering a pan European phenological database with an open, unrestricted data access for science, research and education www.pep725.eu

  12. Community interactions • e.g. micro-analysis of observation patterns Data delivery as simple ASCII downloads • follow us @PEP725 • 2 RSS feeds (PEP725 news, PhenoNews) Outlook • implementation of real-time observations • offer gridded datasets for some plants / phases • ….
