  8. Signing on as a user Anyone can use the OPAC without having to sign on. However, you have to sign on if you wish to: • check your user information • request items • renew items Click User Use your US number for User ID and verification

  9. Sign-out Once you have identified yourself, the following details are available. A Sign-out button appears on the left hand side of the top menu bar. Remember to SIGN OUT after a session Click on Loans to renew your books

  10. Self-initiated renewal of library material Click on the underlined number to initiate renewal of library material Sign-out after you used the user function on the Web Opac

  11. 3 Ways of searching for library sources Browse Keyword Search • Basic Search • Multi-base Get

  12. Browse Browse the alphabetical list of title, author or subject, etc. Use the Browse function when you have an exactauthor, title or subject etc.

  13. BrowseClick on Browse search Click on drop down menu Select Title or Author, etc.

  14. Keyword Search • Basic Search Allows you to perform a keyword search in allfields, or from either title, author or subject

  15. Basic Search Indicate whether you want the words to be adjacent or not You can use Boolean operators e.g.: revolution not (French or France) Truncation is possible. Using ? or * will expand your search

  16. Keyword SearchMulti-base Allows you to do a keyword search across the CALICO libraries for information sources

  17. Get Use the Get function when you have an unique number for a particular item e.g. ISBN

Short format To make sure a book is available, scroll with the arrow to the right: • Available records - holdings information 1/0 = library has 1 item; 0 copies out (the copy status could still be on order or cataloguing. Click holdings library for full details) • 1/1 = library has one item; 1 copy out. Click holdings library for full details • Multiple location – click holdings library for full details

  21. A request link on the holdings screen allows users to request items out on loan • Reservation/Requesting of library material(1) The date when an item must be returned

  22. If you have not signed on as a user before, this window will appear after selecting request on the holdings screen. Reservation/Requesting of library material(2) Use your new US number for user ID and Verification Click on request again after you have signed on to order the requested item.

  23. The delivery location shows where you want to collect the item you have requested – select one Reservation/Requesting of library material(3) Click on Order to initiate the request

  24. To verify your request, click on User • Click on Hold requests Reservation/request of library material(4) Sign-out after a session in which you used the user function on the Web Opac

  25. To view any particular record in full format , click on: • the NUMBER of the item (to the left) or • Full format (under Results list)

  26. Full Format All items – clicking on this will call up the complete list of holdings at the US libraries Links are available from the Full format of the record

  27. This function allows you to modify your search by applying another search term to your previous search. You can enter new terms, from all fields or a selected field, and apply boolean logic – AND, OR or NOT - e.g. in the example above the search for Agriculturehas been narrowed down (AND) to Universiteit van Stellenbosch dissertations and the field to search to Subject

Limit You can limit your search by year, format, language, location, etc.(The languages listed are not a comprehensive list.  Other languages still have to be added.) • e.g. to get a list of all the Chemistry journals, type Chemistry under all fields in the keyword search and limit with filter by format – Serials (Journals…..)

  29. Save/Mail (Selected Select records from your list before you use Save/Mail This feature allows you to e-mail or saveselected records

  30. Complete e-mail address if sending results by e-mail

  31. Available records Available records, displays only those items which are not out on loan

  32. This feature enables you to collect records from a variety of searches, after which they can be printed, saved or e-mailed

  33. When using the Web-based Catalogue on a computer in the library ALWAYS remember to: • Sign-out or reset • Please Do not close the Web-based Catalogue (x)
