  2. What is StreamStats? • A map-based Web application that provides information that can be used by engineers, managers, planners, and others to make informed decisions on water-related activities • Primary product is streamflow statistics

  3. How is StreamStats Information Used? • Engineering Design—Bridges, culverts, flood-plain management • Water and Land Management—Water rights adjudications; water & land-use planning; in-stream flow, fish passage, & habitat studies • Water Quality Regulation—Low flows, perennial vs. intermittent streams (TMDL’s, NPDES Permits) • Design of Sampling Networks—Cover a range of desired flows

State Implementation Process • Usually funded through cooperative agreements with local agencies • Local USGS Water Science Centers • Prepare GIS datasets • Populate database of statistics for USGS gages • Development team sets up internal test site • WSC evaluates accuracy of internal test site • Development team and/or WSC makes any needed changes • Site is made available to public

GIS Data Preparation • Data preparation and watershed characteristics measurements done using ArcHydro Data Model and Tools http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=downloads.dataModels.filteredGateway&dmid=15 • Data for boundary delineation • DEM – usually 10-m NED (http://ned.usgs.gov) • Stream network – Usually NHD (http://nhd.usgs.gov) • Basin boundaries – Usually WBD (http://www.ncgc.nrcs.usda.gov/products/datasets/watershed/) • DEM forced to conform with stream network and basin boundary datasets

StreamStats Versions • National site for data-collection stations only • “Classic” version built using ESRI’s ArcMap and ArcIMS software, with custom connectors • Phased out as of late 2010 • Version 2 – based on ArcGIS Server 9.2 • Released during Oct. 2008 for MA and UT • Now available for all states

  9. Implementation Status • 20 states fully implemented • 5 states partly implemented • 9 states in implementation process

National Site Capabilities Provides ability to locate any USGS streamflow data-collection station in the Nation and get: • Descriptive information about the station • Previously published basin (physical and/or climatic) characteristics • Previously published streamflow statistics • Displays digital topographic maps and aerial imagery as base map

  11. “Classic” Site Capabilities • For data-collection stations, same as national site • For user-selected ungaged sites: • Delineates drainage basin (watershed) boundaries • Editing of basin boundaries, if necessary • Computes basin characteristics • Provides estimates of streamflow statistics based on regression equations • Download of basin boundary shapefiles • Printing of maps shown in user interface

Added Version 2 Capabilities • Estimates streamflow statistics for ungaged sites based on flow at nearby gages (drainage-area ratio method) • Stream network navigation • Computes NHD reach addresses for selected sites • Land surface and stream channel profiles • Traces raindrop path • Primary capabilities available as Web services

Summary of Benefits • StreamStats provides a set of tools that are useful for water resources planning and management, and for engineering design • StreamStats substantially reduces effort and cost compared to previous manual techniques • Network navigation allows: • Estimation of flows for ungaged sites based on flows for nearby gaging stations • Identification of activities upstream or downstream from selected sites and obtaining information for those activities
