  1. Tattoo Safety

  2. How are tattoos applied? • Pigments are inserted through pricks into the skin's top layer • Tattoo artists usually use a hand-held machine, with one or more needles piercing the skin repeatedly • With every puncture, the needles insert tiny ink droplets. • Anesthetics are not used • Can last up to a few hours

  3. Potential risks of tattoos • Allergic reactions • Skin can become red and itch • Skin infections • Bumps and raised areas on tattoo • Bloodborne diseases • Hepatitis B and C, tetanus, HIV (from dirty needles) • No regulation by FDA because it’s a cosmetic • MRI complications • Poor image quality from pigments in skin

  4. Safety measures Go to a reputable tattooing studio that employs only properly trained employees. Make sure the tattoo artist washes his or her hands and wears a fresh pair of protective gloves for each procedure. Make sure the tattoo artist removes a needle and tubes from sealed packages. Any pigments, trays and containers should be unused as well. Artist should sterilize non-disposable equipment

  5. How to take care of your new tattoo Remove the bandage after 24 hours. Use antibiotic ointment Keep the tattooed skin clean Use moisturizer Avoid sun exposure for a few weeks Wear clothes that won’t stick to the tattoo Allow up to 2 weeks for healing (don’t pick at it…it could scar and/or damage the design)

  6. All information was taken from the Mayo Clinic website
