  1. PACKAGING & ENVIRONMENT

  2. DEFINITION • The package is the product, composed by different materials, that contains and stores stocks, from raw materials to final products, and it allows producers to deliver stocks to consumers.

  3. HOW DO WE USE IT? • To store: the package stores the product in time and space. In the most civilized countries, stocks are produced in a place but then consumed in another place, that sometimes could be really far. • Simplify its use: packages are projected to make the use of the product easier. • To communicate and inform: packages are studied to catch consumers’ attention and to show the product sold in the best way.

  4. HOW MANY TYPES OF PACKAGES? In Italy there are three types of packages: primary, secondary and tertiary. • PRIMARY: it stores hygienically the whole product.

  5. SECONDARY: Its function is to protect mechanically and to rationalize the spaces, to be sure that stock can be moved without any damage and stored and then exposed on the shop’s shelves in the best way. • TERTIARY: It allows stock to be trasported. In order to be easily moved the products have been designed "packaging unit load”

  6. Can the package damage the environment? The materials of the package is important, first because it allow the protection and the storing of products and then because they have to be recyclable . If in the past the priority was given to the quality of the materials used, today the real problem is to dispose waste. Many packages particularly those use for food products have been simplified. The aim is to find materials “environmentally friendly” as polythene and polypropylene.

  7. TIPS TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT When we want to buy a product, we often look at the package. Our eyes are captured by “beautiful” and funny packages, but most of the time they are really expensive and they can’t be recycled. For this reason is better to prefer products that have less packages to store the stocks and pay attention to the possibility for the packages to be recycled. A tip to reduce the personal consumption of packages is to use containers that you already own. Glass containers are the most recyclable. NO!

  8. TYPES OF PACKAGING There are many types of packaging nowadays, but which are the most “eco-friendly”? • Tetrapack:it’s a new type of package, made by cellulose, that has even more benefits than frail glass bottles. Tetra Pak packages are formed by aluminum, paper and polyethylene, moreover they are three times “eco-friendly” than packages formed by other materials. When you use a Tetra Pak package you can recycle it. Paper is used to produce other quantities of paper, while polyethylene and aluminum are used to produce new plastic materials.

  9. PET: used to realise packages like plastic bottles. Once bottles are collected, Pet is treated through special grinders in recycling centers, and converted into powder. Finally this powder is used to produce non-alimentary products, such as carpets or belts. Simbolo di riciclaggio de PET

  10. POLYSTYRENE: even if it’s difficult to recycle it, it could be used to produce other products such as toys, cassettes and related containers, office accessories and insulation panels Simbolo riciclo polistirolo

  11. PVC: is mostly used for culinary functions. It’s the easiest recyclable product because its recycle process is simpler than the other processes. Recycled PVC could be used to produce pipes, profile formats, floors, sweaters, shoes and bottles for non-alimentary use. Riciclo pvc
