  2. WHAT IS POPCORN LUNG? • Eight former employees of a microwave-popcorn plant were reported to have severe breathing problems by inhaling chemicals in the plant • Later the chemical was found to be DIACETYL. • Diacetyl causes Bronchiolitis obliterans in the lungs known as “popcorn lung”.

  3. DIACETYL • Diacetyl was flavoring agent to produce buttery taste • When ingested its safe • The problem is when we inhale (like when you microwave the popcorn) it causes respiratory problems

  4. POPCORN LUNG • Bronchiolitis Obliterans or “popcorn lungs” is from scarring of the tiny air sacs in the lungs resulting in the thickening and narrowing of the airways • Serious lung disease that causes coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath, similar to the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

  6. Popcorn lung in smoking cessation class??? • Major popcorn manufacturers removed DIACETEYL from their products. But…..

  7. E-CIGARETTES • DIACETYL is added to “e-juice” liquids by e-cigarette companies • Complement flavorings such as vanilla, maple, coconut and more • Harvard researchers found 39 out of 51 E-cigarette brands contain DIACETYL

  8. E-CIGARETTES • The study also found two similarly harmful chemicals—2,3 pentanedione and acetoin • Roughly 92 percent of the e-cigarettes had one of the three chemicals present
