  1. EASTMAN Centrifugal Pump Vibrations: The Causes by Steven J. Hrivnak, P.E. Associate Mechanical Engineer Tennessee Eastman Eastman Chemical Company

  2. FAULTSREPORTEDOVER 3 YEARS

  3. EASTMAN Vibration: a measure of reliability! Poorlyinstalled and operated pumps average .178 in/secoverall vibration and have6 months life. Properlyinstalled pumps average .071 in/secoverall vibration and have60 months life.

  4. Three Basic Causes of Pump Vibrations: • Mechanically Induced • System Induced • Operation Induced

  5. Mechanically Induced • Bad bearings • Bent Shaft • Unbalanced Rotor • Check Valve Installed Backwards • Mis-Alignment • Looseness • Soft Foot • Maximum Size Impeller

  6. System Induced • Partially/Plugged Strainer • Clogged Impeller or Suction Line • Installation

  7. PIPING?

  8. Foundations and Baseplates

  9. The mass ratio must be 3:1 to minimize vibration

  10. Operationally Induced • Cavitation • Flow • Speed • Insufficient Immersion of Suction Pipe or Bell

  11. Cavitation and Flow

  12. You can’t run a pump with suction and discharge valves closed!

  13. Minimum Flow 1750 rpm 15-20% BEP Flow 3500 rpm 30-50% BEP Flow

  14. Maximum Flow 110-115% BEP Flow

  15. Speed

  16. Suction Pipe Immersion

  17. EASTMAN Conclusions Avoid Max Size Impellers

  18. EASTMAN Conclusions Avoid Max Size Impellers Keep speed to 1750 max

  19. EASTMAN Conclusions Avoid Max Size Impellers Keep speed to 1750 max Keep flow in design range

  20. EASTMAN Conclusions Avoid Max Size Impellers Keep speed to 1750 max Keep flow in design range Grout your baseplates
