  1. Saint Lucia Project by David Dilbeck.

  2. Physical Geography • It is a volcanic and mountainous island with fertile valleys. • The climate is tropical. It has a dry season from January-April, and a rainy season from May-August. • The Twin Pitons (two cone-shaped peaks) are a big tourist attraction, and a scenic highlight of the island.

  4. Physical Geography cont. • The total area of the island is about 238 square miles. That’s slightly larger than Chicago. • Lowest point is sea level (0 feet) • Highest point is Mount Gimie (950 feet) • Coastline is 98 miles long and 86.5% covered by sandy beaches. • Natural hazards include hurricanes and volcanic activity.

Economy • Natural resources: forests, sandy beaches, minerals (pumice), mineral springs • Income: 80.7% services, 16.3% industry, 3% agriculture • Currency: East Caribbean Dollar (ECD) • Most service income is from resorts. • Sugar Beach is their largest resort • They are $37,000,000 in debt as of 2011

  7. Government • Capital is Castries. • They are a parliamentary democracy • The Chief of State is Queen Elizabeth II. She is represented by PearletteLouisy, the Governor General. • The Prime minister is Kenney David ANTHONY. • They have the three branches: Legislative, Executive, and Judicial

  8. History • The first inhabitant of the island were the Arawak Indians who were forced of the island by the French. • It was then explored by France and Spain • It became part of the british territory in 1814 • On February 22, 1976, it achieved full independence from Britain by Boycott

  9. Culture • The languages spoken there are mainly English and French. Others are native. • Catholicism and Christianity are two most predominant religions. • The ethnicities are Black (82.5%), Mixed (11.9%), East Indian (3.2%), and White (2.4%)

Culture cont. • Fet La Woz is an annual rose festival held by the Saint Lucian people on August 31st to celebrate the fertile flowers of the year. • The month of October is set aside to celebrate the heritage of the Arawak Indians. • The music genres played by the Saint Lucian people are Soca, Zouk, and Regae

  11. Puerto Rican Blossom. Women will sometimes wear this to show that they are a swinging single(;

Culture cont. • The women usually wear long dresses that cover the ankles and men wear plain shirts and jeans. • The women sometimes have a flower (usually a Puerto Rican blossom) in their hair. • Their national dish is is the callaloo soup. • The main foods they use in their dishes are potatoes, onion, celery, coconut milk, and thyme.
