Introduction • What is IPTV? • IPTV is a system through which digital television service is delivered using the Internet architecture and networking methods, instead of delivered through traditional radio frequency broadcast, satellite signal, and cable television formats • IPTV and Internet TV • IPTV delivered to TV set, not PC • IP set-top box (STB) • IPTV is provided by a few LARGE telecom providers • Internet TV: anyone can create an endpoint and publish that on a global basis. (YouTube) • They are competitors

Introduction • Why is IPTV? • Network infrastructure today has become highly evolved and is required to support converged IP applications such as video, voice and data (triple play) • IPTV will provide better quality of service than Internet streaming video • IPTV has the potential to offer an interactive, customized experience • The telco operators’ weapon in the fight for market share

  6. Type of Service • Broadcast/Multicast • Regularly scheduled programs sent to a large number of subscribers • Subscribers tune to a specific channel • Subscribers cannot influence the playback

  7. Type of Service • Video-on-Demand (VoD) • Stored videos are sent to subscribers on request • Subscribers receive their own copy of the video • Subscribers can control playback – VCR operation

  8. Underlying Protocols • IGMP – Internet Group Management Protocol • Multicast specification • PIM (Protocol-Independent Multicast)

  9. Underlying Protocols • RTSP – Real Time Streaming Protocol • Client-server application layer protocol • For user to control display • RTSP is out-of-band protocol (similar to FTP)
