  1. Gustar translates backwards Not “I like it” “It is pleasing to me”

  2. Rule 1 – gusta with a singular noun: • A mí me gusta el color verde. • Gusta is singular because the subject “color” is singular.

  3. Rule 2 - gusta with verbs: • A mí me gustacocinar y comer el broccoli (porque es verde, claro). • Gusta is singular because the subject “cocinar y comer” is a verb • (even if there are 2 or more verbs) • (notice they are infinitives)

  4. Rule 3 – gustan with plural nouns : • A mí me gustanlas plantas y los extraterrestres de Júpiter. (es obvio) • Gustan ispluralbecausethesubject “plantas y extraterrestres” is plural.

  5. Rule 4 - negation: • A mí no me gustan las cebras. (excepto las que son verdes) • No goes before the IOPN

  6. Rule 5 - “a …” phrase to emphasize or clarify: • Use an “a …” phrase that matches to emphasize or clarify. • Use other IOPNs to tell about other people. (me, te, le, nos, os, les) • A nosotros nosgusta la ensalada • A mi familia le gusta llevar los zapatos verdes.

  8. Rule 6 – questions: • question + verb + subject • ¿Qué coloreste gustan más a ti? • ¿Ati qué te gustahacer? Or ¿Qué te gustahacer ati? • ¿A quién le gustapintar?

  9. Rule 7 – other verbs: • A mí me molesta la pizza verde. (green pizza bothers me) • There are more verbs like gustar where the word order and translations are backwards.

Other verbs like gustar: • apetecer – to long for • interesar –to be interested • convenir – to suit • molestar – to bother • fascinar – to fascinate • resultar – to result • bastar – to be enough • encantar –to like very much • quedar – to have left over • sobrar – to have in excess • aburrir – to be boring • hacer falta – to need • doler– to ache,hurt • agradar – to please • importar – to be important • parecer – to seem • sorprender – to surpris • fastidiar – to bother • faltar – to lack
